I posted a rather long one on that episode earlier.  I will repost it later 
this week.  The Gist of that scene was this:

Pirate was having "one of his own," meaning his own fantasy (read dream).  
In his dream he was in Hell (akin to Dante's).  His Sin was laid before him, 
along with his irredemptibility.  Along comes Katje, the Goddess of Guilt, 
and she makes Pirate skirm, exquisitely so, of course...

But the real "meat" of this section revolves around the "Devil's Advocate" 
who argues for a form of RETURN.  Bottom line of his way back is "Fight! 
Kill! Go down FIGHTING!!!"  The Counterforce requires self-sacrifice.  There 
is no other way, it seems so far, except maybe Slothrop's path,  which seems 
the same, only different....
