D'oh! Just got it: the explanation is, that T. is watching a group of people
rehearsing a scene from what will be von Goell's movie of Martin Fierro.
This is also the only concrete statement that the people T. is watching are
in fact the Argentines. It is a funny kind of understatement to say, "but
Tchitcherine has never read *Martin Fierro*"; as if, had he read it, he
would know right away what was going on.
A few other things:
p. 613 -- Graciela and Belaustegui are described as "a good pair, wired
front-to-front". What does this mean?
p. 616 -- "ex Africa semper aliquid novi" -- does that mean "from Africa,
always something new"? What is the source of this line?
