The one by "Henry's" translator flows more smoothly but I'm still not sure 
what the sentence means.  If I waited "once again," then obviously I am not 
a victim, and besides, if I were in some way a victim of the gassing, 
however long the wait, it would have been too short a time -- unless, 
unless, the time spent with the doctor was more excruciating than death. Is 
this the meaning?  I'm only guessing.

I am not trying to fan the flames of the recent discussion regarding 
nazism, but I am curious about this idiom, itself.
