I agree with Terrance that the times of postmodernism and deconstructivsm are
over. The reason for this is that "anything goes" has led us into the chaos
of the world economy of today. We are not only a Western world but a world
full of Ruandas, Burundis, Sierra Leones and Yugoslavias. The reason for the
"clash of civilizations" (Huntington) are not ethnic troubles but economic
unequalities which unables more and more people to reproduce their social
structure in a reasonable way. The demonstrators in Seattle and Washington
were on the right way. The totalitarism of today has now the shape of WTO and
IMF.
The so called "structural reforms" in East Europe, the former Soviet Union
and in Asia are in reality a street to Nowhere. The populations there are
getting poorer and poorer, the "governments" there are more or less mafia
gangs. We all know it, and even the ruling classes of the Western World know
it. But our mass medias tell us a lot of bullshit and lies which they call
"information". We all know it, and they all know it. But nothing happens.
The next Kosovo will happen perhaps in the Caspian Sea. In Aserbeidschan and
in Middle and Central Asia there is a lot of oil. The war in Tschetschenya
has is origine in the oil, and Russia fears that it's losing its influence in
the Caspic region. There is a competition between West Europe, Russia and a
turkish-American coalition because of the oil fields there. And there is
built up a coalition between Iran, Armenia and Russia against the Turkish
influence. An explosive situation. Everybody knows this.
The Taliban in Afghanistan are supported by Pakistan, and Pakistan is
supported by the CIA. The "Muddjahedin", the "Holy Warriors" of the Islam
which are the favorite enemies of the American government got their weapons
from the CIA during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. And why are the
Talibans supported? Because of the oil in the Caspian Sea.
American thinking of nowadays is fixed on "the state", the state is the evil
for everything. The murderers of Oklohoma City thought that the State
Department was part of a "secret" UNO world government. The origine of the
"American paranoia" is a mistrust against "the state" which 200 years ago had
its good reasons but nowadays is completely absurd. In reality there is a
"network" between "the state" and "the market" so that you can hardly
separate them. There are only changing regulation regimes but nowhere a
contradiction between "the state" and "the market". Both are illusions and
ideology. From a structural point of view there are only several versions of
the "power-knowledge-complex" (Michel Foucault) and I think that Pynchon is
speaking about this but not about "the state".
The chaos and the ideologies of the 20th century cannot be overthrown by the
revival of 200 years old ideologies like "neoclassic theory". The "invisible
hands" are the hands of paranoia and a general suspicision against anybody
anywhere. When the "counterforce" is infiltrated by such thinking then you
can in deed sit in Mr. Zhlubb's cinema and wait for "The Rocket" which comes
perhaps from North Corea if you believe the Star Wars Warriors.
Brave New World.
