WWII novels resonances

Currently reading "White Teeth" - novel du jour by a young British woman
named Zadie Smith.  Our 2 heroes, Archie and Samad meet cute in a tank
during WWII, which breaks down somewhere in (Yugoslavia?  have to check) and
they spend 2 weeks bunkered in an old hospital, not realizing the war has
ended.  Sort of Slothrop (if he was British and a virgin) meets the Sapper
from "The English Patient."

A fun read, by the way, all about the melting pot that is post-colonial
London.  There was some minor sensation caused by the amount of the advance
given to the author, hence its "du-journess."
