thx, J.  I'm waiting for my library to get a copy, but thought I'd mention 
as well Mo Yan's The Republic of Wine, a bizarre novel about modern 
China--it's very much like Manuscript Found at Sargossa--stories within 
stories and such, demons, djins, cannibalism.  Story revolves around a 
detective investigating the eating of little boy babies in Liquorland. It's 
also rather funny...
