When I was in the U.S. Army, 1972-1974, PFC was the third rank up 
from the bottom.  Enlisted man's rank was also expressed in "E" 
values:  E-1, entry level; E-2, no particular name other than the 
generic "private" which covered E-1 and E-2; PFC was E-3, the rank I 
managed to achieve in 2 years and 2 days of otherwise undistinguished 
service.

P.S.  So, Malign, I'm guessing you find Pynchon's use of the 
Holocaust as a metaphor in V. (as we see in Thomas' fine notes) and 
GR to be offensive? If so, write him a letter about it. I bet if you 
use just the right insult, he'll apologize.
