If homosexuality as imagined by Pynchon and Proust before him isn't an
aberration, a sin, something not in accordance with natural law,
etc., etc., then what good is it to literature? No better than ice
cream. Remember what Stendl said the first time he tasted ice cream. "It's
very good--what a pity it isn't a sin!" Nannyism and political correctness
are also sins, only not very interesting ones.
