Well, let's see. In American pop psychology phobe and phile can be
thought of as merely different expressions of the same compulsion to be
strongly anchored to something. And any port in the storm will do. For
example, we can come to love something because we perceive hating it as
just too dangerous. Safest course is conspicuously to make peace with the
enemy. Or we can come to hate something because we are perilously drawn to
it. In the 50s quite a few staunch Marxists became archconservatives.
Such thinking might be thought harmless but sometimes extreme thinkers
forget about the rights of people who disagree with them.
'Course this is just one way of looking at things.
I know this sounds platitudinous.
