It's that International Economic Summit thing, being held, of all places, in
Melbourne's Crown Casino. There have been anti-globalization protests and
Bill Gates' appearance yesterday occasioned a strong reaction from the
demonstrators, but I think the main ruckuc occurred on the opening day.
There's only been a couple of arrests as far as I know, a handful of
injuries (protesters and police in equal numbers), and I heard this morning
that the protesters have assigned police liaison officers and have
negotiated that the police stop using riot squad tactic and horse-mounted
officers. I don't think it has been anywhere near as violent as the one in
Seattle, or similar demonstrations in France ... but I'm only watching it on
the news like you are. One of my colleagues' sons is demonstrating so if I
hear any inside gossip I'll pass it along.
