HAREbrained seems to have been the original form but HAIRbrained come very
quickly into acceptable usage.
By the way my saying that hairbrained or harebrained was an honor in
Pynchon wasn't meant to be a big deal. No one as far as I know ever said
it was NOT a badge of honor.
