This current discussion of Weissmann/Blicero has reminded me that a while
back I got off on essentially the same topic from the point of view, not
of McH and W's material typonymy, which I don't know for sure if I'm even
applying half way correctly, but from the idea (Linda Hutcheons' I
think) that Pynchon writes historical metafiction--in other words P
creates something quite original and DIFFERENT and some dicernable 
distance apart from the actual recorded WWII history we all know so
well. I don't know if I made the point back then that W/B needs to be seen
as more than just another garden variety Nazi, but I think in retrospect
this is very  important. To ignore the fuller creation, which P obviously
put so much effort into, would be a terrible waste it seems to me.

But it's a free country. Excuse me, a free WORLD.
