Louisianians call it Mardi Gras. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the holiday is
called Carnaval. In Germany, Carnival season is traditionally held the three
days prior to Ash Wednesday. This year the dates will be Sunday-Tuesday,
Feb. 25-27.

Carnival is particularly popular in big cities along the Rhine River,
including the Fastnacht of Mainz and the Karnevals of Cologne and
Dusseldorf. Villages and towns throughout Baveria celebrate the season,
particularly Munich where it is called Fasching. [...]

Munich, the capital of Bavaria, celebrates with more than 1,000 balls,
parties and other festivities. Popular events are the Black and White balls,
The Washerwomen's Ball and the Gaudi-Wurm parade on Monday, Feb. 26.
Visitors should make a point of trying the traditional Fasching doughnuts.

During Carnival season, the world seems to be partying. But there's only one
place that celebrates Carnival a full two months before Fat Tuesday. You
might not expect it, but Germans are known for their massive, elaborate
Carnival celebrations, known as the "Fifth Season" or "Season of Fools." And
Munich is especially famous for going all out in its pre-Lent festivities.
In Bavaria, they call it Fasching, and the partying starts on January 7th,
the day after the Catholic holiday of Epiphany. You have until February 27th
to get a load of the Faschingstreiben (festivities) including costume
parties, parades and dancing in the streets.
