Yes, I can confirm this, I was born in Mainz, my mother comes from there, but 
was never a big "Fasenachter" (In dialect they say "Fasenacht" to it). The 
word "Fastnacht" comes from "fasten", to fast, but the fasting time begins at 
"Aschermittwoch", where the priests "paint" a cross out of ashes on the 
forehead...
