Or, it could be that he was more a spectator than a participant back in
Munich as well, which is why he assumes the various roles (sferics monitor,
voyeur to Vera's parody of s & m with Weissmann, Hedwig's sugar daddy, old
Hugh's son, and especially the role of narrative agent for Stencil/Pynchon)
with such ease. Rather than participating he watches (and listens): he *is*
a mirror, aurally as well as visually. And, what he sees and hears here
reminds him of what was happening back home, which is why he dreams of
Munich again for the first time. Thus, Foppl's villa under siege is also a
microscosm for Weimar Germany under siege.
