Okay, found it, "'Metzger,' Oedipa whispered,
embarrassed, 'I'm a Young Republican," Ch. 3, p. 76,
though it seems she is more immediately "embarrassed"
by Metzger's preceding outburst ("'Fine,' Metzger said
..."), which thereafter gets "even louder." Still,
the point remains, there seem Reasons for, there seems
Significance to, a character's ostensible political
affiliation here ...
