The problems with the premis (Pynchon knew people who
knew or had knowledge of LSD, CIA, JFK, not available
to the public when he was writing the novel) are
many. The most obvious problem is, that Pynchon, as he
will in all his novels, is playing with the reader and

if we fail to recognize his play as play and read it
as
a cryptic contemplation on conspiracies, we are no
longer reading fiction and Pynchon, I guess, is not a
great american novelist who creates funny and
interesting characters and situations and sends them
on
bizarre quests for our amuzzzzzement.

I knew a lot about LSD use by the U.S. government and
by private psychiatrists long before Thomas R. Pynchon
wrote his novel. I had very good reason to look into
the matter and I did. I did not know people who knew.
I knew how to research a subject and I was motivated.
