Good for you, Mark. I've been stewing over this fallacious Varo/Varro
connection for days, but haven't had the time to write. IMO, it's one of
Hollander's less well considered theories. One might also say that RV's
world, like Pynchon's, is Boschian, hermetic, deeply coded with personal
symbolism and informed by both science and mysticism. She is also fond
of cats, music and female genitalia. (And, incidentally, all the women
in her paintings look just like her.) I have prints of Armonia, Energia
Cosmica and Creacion de las aves hanging in my otherwise awful cubicle
here at work. The first US retrospective of her work, called The Magic
of Remedios Varo, was shown at the National Museum of Women in the Arts
in Washington DC in 2000. I had the very good fortune to see it.
