There is something about a pendulum that seems to defy
the popular notion of the second law: all things must pass.

There are no perfect clocks- the no return clause is always
in effect- inspite of Harrison's best efforts and legacy. And
even if there were (dig that subjunctive!) merely observing 
them would be enough to nudge them over to the dark side.

So maybe it's the idea of returning that makes the pendulum
so intriguing- the spiral become a circle- in the mind's eye,
by the Magick of Imagination.

But now I have to scoot.
