But the story of i-Cybie's creation also underscores a shift in the
industry. As toys become more technically complex, the way that
children play with them has changed. Classic toys like dolls and
stuffed animals require children to create personalities for them.
With the latest electronic playthings, it is inventors, not children,
who imbue the objects with life and character. So the struggle to
build i-Cybie was not just about making it work, or even about making
it fun. Mr. Filo and Mr. Jones had to give it a soul.
