MacAdams, Birth of the Cool

This covers the territory (post-war artistic and intellectual
avant-garde, especially east coast, NYC) pretty well. Provides a
credible operative definition of "cool." But in my view it's more an
appreciation, than a critical analysis (lots of idolizing and icon
worship). And the book itself, from its page design to its prose style,
is decidedly uncool.
