And there's Geli Tripping, also with earth (Ge) in her name. As a witch
-- the usual term for those who keep pagan faith alive -- she has an owl
as "familiar," suggesting her identification with Athena. Athena was a
mother goddess whose worship came from Africa (she is probably the
Libyan Neith), a powerful parthenogenic force before she was reborn out
of Zeus's head to protect the patriarchal order of Athens. This owl digs
its claws into the back of her beloved, Vaslav Tchitcherine, during
lovemaking, although it mistakenly does this to Slothrop as well,
marking him too as one of hers.

When Geli finds Vaslav, he is waiting sitting in a stream, where he
shares her bread and becomes oblivious to all but her. A bird sings. It
reminds one (me, at least) of Dante's crossing of the river Lethe to
enter Eden (rest: peace, love, and freedom: harmony).

He has been through Hell and Purgatory, has earned the Rest.

of the Elect has gone to his reward, and the Preterite may enjoy a
life unfettered, the life their souls have promised them. Brief, though,
as a new Elect are already choosing themselves . . .
