I should have said, its prominence in Buddhism &c. probably clinched it
for them.
(The Nazis, specially Himmler, were indeed interested in Buddhism.)

The rest of your post is very helpful (too). The whole Freudian thing
you describe is so important to Gravity's Rainbow, yet it's always
seemed a bit theoretical and therefore implausible so -- even knowing
how crucial it is to understand it -- I never bothered, preferring to
take an older mythological way in. And I don't know how I forgot, when I
was putting together my other post on Oedipus, that part where Pynchon
talks about just that thing. Typical. 

And, a kid like me? I assure you, I may not be what most people consider
to be mature, but I'm no kid.  Nor ram.  Nor scapegoat.
