1904: Herero People Began Uprising

The Herero people of South West Africa (later renamed Namibia) began an
uprising against the German colonizers. Led by Samuel Maharero, the Herero 
won several key victories against Germany. In retaliation, German troops 
massacred 75 percent of the Herero population. Herero survivors scattered 
throughout South West Africa, and a substantial number fled to Botswana.
