I think in the midst of the current section this question is answered
definitively.  Starting on the last line of page 138 (Harper & Row
Perennial Fiction Library edition) and continues onto 139.  Geronimo
has figured out that on Friday night "they were working not for
Zeitsuss but for the U. S. Government, since Friday is one-fifth of the
week and the government takes one-fifth of your check for withholding
tax."
