While his work probably doesn't speak to too many people on the list (I personally am not a fan of his fiction, ie Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, Jacob Too-Too and the Hooded Fang) his passing is worth mention IMHO. Most literate, politically conscious Canadians would know his essays and journalism. He had the ability to reduce high minded french Canadian independistes to obvious self serving whiners in a word or two "calling every tool in the shed a spade, just in case" (see "Oh Canada, Oh Quebec".) Trenchant, prickly, irascible opponent of ethnic french politics, garrulous freeloading drunk, sharp as a tack, moist as a "wet nap", by most accounts a great guy to have a drink with. The retrospective interviews on CBC are in full force and I have yet to see one with Mordecai not in a bar... these go back some 30 years. Obits never do justice, and I've never done an obit, so I'm off...
err... I'm assuming there are people who have heard of him out there, Canadian or not.
RIP Mordecai Richler 1931-2001
