Truman got us involved, Eisenhower deepened the involvement (at the urging
of U.S. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles), Kennedy and Johnson
escalated U.S. involvement, Nixon and Kissenger prolonged it unnecessarily.

assistance to the Diem regime, which became increasingly unpopular with the
people of South Vietnam."
