Not a specific reply to jbor's message, just a few
more or less general thoughts upon the topic:

1) It is to my mind perfectly plausible that some
members of the police forced arrested protesters to
hail Mussolini. I would in fact be only mildly
surprised if something similar, and thus worse,
happened in a German police station (not because
policemen and -women are all right-wing extremists but
because some of them are). I doubt, though, that
Italian policemen are permitted to have portraits of
Mussolini in their stations.

2) As far as Carlo Giuliani, the dead protester, is
concerned, I generally share Terrance's and jbor's
view. In a certain sense the "bloody situation" was
responsible for his death. Who was responsible for the
situation is another question. Yesterday, at
Giuliani's funeral, his father said that he felt sorry
for the 20-year old policeman who shot his son. A
truly admirable statement I think.

3) We have various accounts of how Giuliani's death
came about. And not even the people who were there can
be sure what exactly it was they were witnessing. To
declare "Giuliani was murdered in cold blood by the
police and then intentionally run over by the van"
under these circumstances is propaganda (again, this
is just a general thought, not a specific response).
One may perhaps blame the young policeman for
Giuliani's death, but the argument would have to
contain a little less bias and a little more detail.

4) Certainly the police is to blame for their
immensely violent attack on the school in which many
of the protesters were sleeping. This rather
frightening incident indeed reminds one of the
function of the police force as an instrument of
spreading terror among the population in totalitarian
states. It remains to be seen how many of the people
responsible for this attack will be taken to court and
how many of them will be condemned.
