Thanks to everyone who replied to my pronunciation query, both on-list and off.  Paolo Beneforti's sound recording was especially helpful.  

Doug Millison wrote, "This is a case where it might be instructive to hear Pynchon read from his work. Given his apparent fluency with foreign languages, I wonder if he might preserve the original pronunciation."

I agree--and how great would that be?  If only he'd start including a sound recording on CD with the novels.  I'd buy them all again just for that. :)

A couple of people suggested to me that "Frenesi" is meant to suggest "free and easy"--something that never occurred to me.  

Diogenes wrote that in Spanish, rather than the English meaning for "frenzy," "frenesí" "is used to describe intense passionate physical desire"; this makes sense for Frenesi Gates, I think.
