This is no doubt true for the adult reader. However, mostly because an
anthology containing the novella occupied a prominent position (nice
binding)  on the family coffee table I read it as a teenager.. Pretty suble
but fascinating  even on my own immature level. Probably I just wasn't
expecting anyone would write a book on homosexuality.

Later in my own San Gabriel mountain sanitorium the good sisters brought me
a copy of  The Magic Mountain.
That I completely got. Mann must have been a lunger himself.
