embroidered bag lightly on his shoulder ..." (V., Ch.
14, Sec i, p. 392

"... the flowered bag without gaiety under the
clouds." (p. 395)

"... the traveling bag." (ibid.)

"'Move?'  She gazed at the raving flesh of tropical
blossoms decorating her bag." (p. 396)

"Serre Chaude" (back to p. 395)

Hothouse flowers?  But what's Pynchon's bag with
Melanie's bag here?  Carpetbagging?  Tres
colonialiste, non?  Yesyesyes, child molestation, a
missing father, an absentee mother, dreams, mirrors,
much to be discussed here, but I'm taking my role as,
well, being specifically my role, to pont out, bring
up the things that might otherwise go not pointed out,
not brought up.  And there are always so many peculiar
details with Pynchon ...
