This is really all semantics.  One could accurately say he is a 
publicity-recluse.  He does not want to be recognized as "Thomas Pynchon" in 
public.  He also seems to want the "public-character" of himself to be as 
thin as possible, with the notable exception of whatever he's revealed in 
Hadju's book.  When he "speaks" in public it is usually commentary about 
someone/something other than himself.
