What's interesting in this chapter, of course, is that V. is
"excommunicated" from the Kingdom of Death -- rescued or repatriated from it
in other words, even if only momentarily -- precisely *by* her homosexual
love for Melanie. Both points are thus proven: Pynchon, while not a
homosexual writer, is certainly not anti-homosexual, and the simple equation
of homosexuality and the Kingdom of Death in Pynchon's work isn't on.
