who's Christian?

Terrance,

For starters, we have critics here on Pynchon-L who point to the way Pynchon
critiques religion, specifically Chritianity, as part of the System that
oppresses people and rapes the Earth -- perhaps they can point to articles
or books that support this thesis; I'm not particularly interested in
tracking down that sort of thing.

"bringing in texts that P is not known to have read or used
to write his novels only clouds the issue imho."

I have pointed to some references to support the general notion that the
conscious universe/living Earth is a concept that is very much part of
Christianity today and that it has been so from the very beginnings of the
Judeo-Christian tradition. Much Scripture could be quoted, in both the Old
and New Testatment, to illustrate the reality of God animating the universe,
the universe and people (animals, too, cf. St. Francis, Brother Sun and
Sister Moon) as well. Of course I'm not trying to argue that Pynchon uses
these references as sources. Nor have I yet had the time to put together a
comprehensive reading of Pynchon's work to expose what I believe might
suggest that his novels build on a religious notion (living universe/Earth,
evolution of consciousness, etc.) that his writing opposes to the Death
worshipping religion of technology that acts to destroy the Earth.
