Thank you for the kind words, Dave! I really am bummed -- I even
picked up a book on the Herero genocide, and found an article on
atmospheric research, but I haven't had time to even read them, let
alone organize a coherent overview of the first part of the chapter,
and this weekend I will be away from my computer. Between trips to my
family and frantically searching for a new job, not to mention
launching the Libyrinth's long-overdue Sammy Beckett site, I have
barely had time to read my email. As Charlie Brown might say,
"Arrrrgh!"
Terrence:
>You did a hell of a job.
Like Dave, I am not sure who this was directed to.... But I agree,
from what I followed of the Group Reading, Dave truly did a hell of a
job. If it was directed at me for The Modern Word/Libyrinth, then
thank you very much -- though it *is* a group project, and much
credit also belongs to Larry Daw, Tim Conley, Andrew Hurley, Paul
Joyce, Bob Williams, and many others!
However, despite the fact I am looking for a job, I would like to
mention that the site will continue to exist. Due to the last year of
dot-com misery, our investors (a few literary people in NYC) have
basically lowered the "burn rate" while we consider turning the site
into a not-for-profit venture at the end of 2001. (Which suits me
fine -- I would rather it be a not-for-profit venture anyway, and
really, it's not like we've made any money. The great unwashed hordes
are not racing out to buy Mason & Dixon guides and reading lamps from
Levenger!) My problem is, of course, that I can no longer be paid as
full-time editor -- I have to find a "real job" and work on the site
at nights and weekends, etc. Which certainly saddens me a bit, but
then again, it was fun getting to run it full-time for a year. The
important thing to me is that the site is still around, and still
growing, albeit more slowly, as it did when I ran it myself from
1995-1999.
Thanks again,
