The career of a word: the Nazis called them "Fremdarbeiter" ("foreign 
workers", ok., but "Fremder" also means "stranger", "alien"); after the war 
workers from other countries (now volunteers, Italians, Turks, people from 
Greece) in the "Wirtschaftswunderzeit" (Adenauer era) were called 
"Gastarbeiter" ("Guest workers"), nowadays they are "auslaendische 
Mitbuerger" (foreign fellow citizens) - but without any or only few civil 
rights... it's now easier to become a German citizen, but the "ius sanguinis" 
is still the main thing.
