Couldn't "Nachtlager" be an allusion to the birth of Jesus Christ? As a child 
I heard the "christmas story" where Maria and Joseph were looking for a 
Nachtlager but cold-hearted people gave them no place in their houses. 

And remember: chapter 1 of V. begins at christmas 1955, and an old man is 
singing (I must retranslate it from my German edition):

On the old East Main there's christmas every night...
in German:
Auf der alten East Main ist Heiligabend jede Nacht...
