Again, this might be of interest ...

Dickson, David. The Utterance of America: Emersonian
Newness in Dos Passos' U.S.A. and Pynchon's
Vineland. Gothenburg Studies in English 71 (1998).

I haven't much read it yet, but it seems to take a
Bakhtinian approach of some sort, and makes some
reference to Emerson, that "transparent eyeball" thing
or whatever, see here as I recall ...

Porter, Carolyn. Seeing and Being: The Plight of the
Participant Observer in Emerson, James, Adams, and
Faulkner. Middletown, CT: Wesleyan UP, 1985.

Will perhaps post from what seems to have been
Dickson's dissertation at the U of Goteborg (Sweden)
if/when I get a chance, but I've not had much downtime
of late, and I'm busy preparing for Ch. 14.

I do want to mention that jbor made some interesting
comments about possible Ayn Rand intertexts here, I'd
also throw in John Dos Passos' U.S.A. Trilogy (those
"newsreels" et al.) in re: that tickertaping of
catastrophes in V. I believe Doug brought up.

And, John Bailey, anyone, everyone, have y'all seen
L'Humanite as well? Reminds me, Andrei Tarkovsky this
weekend (Solaris, Stalker, plus that Chris Marker [La
Jetee] documentary). Talk about yr leisurely pacing.
Okay, back to catching up here ...
