PRIVACY: US Using Echelon To Spy On Citizens, Says Euro Parliament 
A new European Parliament document confirms the existence of a secret,
U.S.-led global surveillance network, known as Echelon, monitoring
telephones, faxes and e-mails, according to the New Scientist. It recommends
that all European citizens should encrypt their e-mail and use open-source
software that can be checked for hidden eavesdropping; most commercial
software code is secret. The document suggests that Echelon could be in
breach of European human rights law and calls for the U.K. - Echelon's key
suspected European partner - to be more accountable over its use.
