"I contacted Eisner and asked him if he had interviewed Pynchon or
where he had gotten the quote.  He dodged the question and would say only
that he was absolutely certain that the quote was authentic."

Not afraid of face-to-face confrontations, Millison faces the real
(non-virtual) face of Eisner (who presumably has basked in the presence of
TRP), risking sneezes, flu or worse. And what does he get? Evasions mixed
with certainties and authenticities. Of course TRP has used drugs. His
novels are full of allusions that could only have been the result of
experience. Anyone who has known the thrill of the downhill slide of
mind-expansion, the joy of viewing the void that is the un-nameable, knowing
the full measure of pity for those who have not known the gut-wrenching
confrontation with one's final self. Oh, the rapture! Just the memory dims
my orbic sight-sensors (to call them mere "eyes" is an obscenity) with the
tears of transcendental ecstasy. And, God, then we know, like our skin, our
tongues, or very genitalia, the buzzing frenzy of the Atom, the whining
speech of the complete Cosmos. Oh, yes. Anyone who has experienced that,
and then has read the works of TRP, knows that He has done drugs. Just say
YES! You have but one precious existence.

But what do I know?
I am only
Eulenspiegel
