As much as I try to stay out of the current events
discussions here, well, my two cents ... my
understanding is, we gave the Taliban something on the
order of $43 million earlier this year in order to
declare the growing of opium poppies against the will
of Allah or somesuch, in essence to step on the Afghan
heroin trade. Trick is, the CIA had initially
ENCOURAGED the raising of said cash crop in order to
fund the resistance to the Soviet occupation from
whence the Taliban sprang, to the point where Pakistan
is now per capita the most heroin-addicted nation on
earth. And so forth. Had posted a link to something
on all of this a while back, but my archive woes

At any rate, point is, both "wars" (I don't know, I
guess I still nostalgically think of "war" in the
classic, nation-state vs. nation-state with ostensible
rules of conduct, at least, sense) are intimately
entangled with each other, insofar as they are
separable at all ...
