Do see Jean Luc-Godard's Une femme est une femme (A
Woman is a Woman, 1961), his self-described
"neorealist musical." Talk about yr
verfremmsdungseffekt ...
But an excellent place to start with Godard, esp. for
Americans, given our inculcation into the musical
genre. Makes obvious what he's up to early on, AND it
stars both Anna Karina and Jean-Paul Belmondo
(Jean-Claude Brialy, Nicole Paquin ... Michel Legrand
sdtk. ...) ...

And see also ...
Altman, Rick. The American Film Musical.

All sorts of interesting things in the air here these
