"There has always been a close connection between military and
technological/scientific thinking. The French word for "machine", for
instance, for a long time referred only to military machines, because the
French had no term for civilian machines. The same applies to the radio:
long before the first program was aired from the Berlin "Voxhaus" soldiers
in the trenches of Verdun had earphones put on their heads and listendes to
light music broadcasted over the field radio during battle breaks. Equally,
every theater is front theatre and "The desire for light radio programs is
strongest on the part of the front" (J. Goebbels).
As computer and media musicians we asked ourselves whether it is possible to
habe other than military ideas working with military technology (computers
etc.) and a military medium like the radio. As basic material we digitalized
exclusively original recordings ranging from the beginnings of electric news
transmission to modern broadcasts. Additional significant pictures and
drawings referring to radio history were transformed inot music by the
computer. Original recordings were used to control sequencers; e.g. Hitler`s
voice controls Mozarts "Kleine Nachtmusik"."
