NP? Wounded prisoners shot and left to die

Did you read what the Guardian reported on Nov 26, "Morris"?  Their
reporters in Afghanistan interviewed witnesses who said the prisoners
smuggled weapons into the fort.  I still wonder why the Northern Alliance
let them do that.

Hundreds of Pakistani, Arab and Chechen prisoners of war were killed last
night as US jets launched air strikes to help Northern Alliance forces
quell an apparent prison uprising.

As Taliban forces continued to flee their last northern stronghold in
Kunduz, American jets bombed a mud-walled fort near the northern city of
Mazar-i-Sharif to put down what Northern Alliance generals described as a
massive escape attempt.

At least 500 Taliban prisoners broke down their jail doors and tried to
fight their way to freedom with Kalashnikov rifles, machine guns and
grenades which they had smuggled into the fort, witnesses said. [...]

Amnesty demands inquiry as hundreds die in fort siege

Amnesty International, the human rights organisation, today called for an
urgent inquiry into the killing of hundreds of Taliban prisoners at a fort
in northern Afghanistan.

"An urgent inquiry should look into what triggered this violent incident,
including any short comings in the holding and processing of the prisoners,
and into the proportionality of the response," Amnesty said in a statement.

In a further development, the group has alleged that people held in
American jails in connection with the September 11 terrorist strikes on
Washington and New York had been mistreated.

Osama Awadallah, 21, a Californian student charged with twice lying about
his association with two people suspected of participating in the hijacking
of the aeroplane used to attack the Pentagon, was roughed up by guards who
kept him from sleeping, Amnesty said.

An Egyptian man, Mohammed Maddy, was also assaulted by guards, the group
added, and an elderly Maltese couple entering the US were held overnight in
a detention centre where they were allegedly denied food and water, despite
the woman being a diabetic.

Amnesty said it gathered its information from family members, lawyers and
news reports, and called on the US attorney general, John Ashcroft, to
guarantee safe treatment.

An Associated Press photographer saw a field of 50 bodies as Northern
Alliance soldiers cut the scarves from the dead men with knives and
scissors. At least one fighter took gold fillings from a corpse.

Some Northern Alliance soldiers have said that the fighting began when
guards were attempting to tie the prisoners' hands behind their backs. [...]
