long opening sentences

I've been remiss in my MDMD........In the predictable discussion 
regarding the opening sentence - did anyone mention that Dos 
Passos opens 42nd Parallel with a monstrously long opener?
The DP trilogy seems to have enjoyed periods of critical 
"dormancy" and "rediscovery", with one of those seemingly 
occurring during P's college days.....
