one could argue doug that one would have to be dead or in debt to the
political machine not to be aware of this

his administration is partly to blame for sure, as does much of post world
war 2 american foreign policy--yes, the cold war mentality--why else do we
support such authoritarian regimes--because they're not totalitarian? But
let's make it clear that there are legitimate grievances in the Arab
world--the Saudi royal family, Sadat/Mubarak in Egypt maybe the best the US
can hope for--do we want more Taliban like regimes in such strategic places.
It's very complicated how to play this in the real world, but I wonder if
America is only the rallying point to drum up an Islamic fundamentalist
front, where power, as we know, seems to be the ultimate goal for those few
privelaged mullahs

And, of course, the
>U.S.-led sanctions and continued bombing in Iraq which have led to hundreds
> >of thousands of civilian casualties over the past decade were instituted
>by >Bush pere, whose CIA escapades may well play a role going even farther
>back >than that.

Again, this is not simple an issue with crazy man Saddam hanging around.
doug--i believe most folks here don't have their head up their ass, we all
know violence is never the best choice, that innocents are killed, that
politics and governments of all stripes take advantage, that for the most
part we are all spectators to what's going on, that the US government is not
above some nasty realpolitik, that we benefit from such global systems on
some level, and many elsewhere do not.

I think it's the obviousness of your critiques that get u in trouble--we've
all heard it before, my friend
