Yes. The govenment is simply urging people not to be so persimistic about
the future that they stop buying things they want. No one is telling people
in danger of losing their jobs to go out and buy a new car. No question but
what optimism makes capitalist economies work, reasonably well much of the
time. It would be very strange if a govenment didn't try to encourage as
much optimism as possible in a serious crisis. The crisis by the way would
have been nearly as serious even without 9/11. A recession was on the
horizon. In any case urgings from the govenment have only very marginal
effect. Americans base their purchasing decisions on their family's economic
self interest. They don't buy to support the President or the economy.
Heading for the mall.
