Non sequitur. The question was your assertion that "public opinion remained
overwhelmingly in favor of the war throughout the sixties," which is
demonstrably false. In fact Nixon--no friend of mine, by the way--won
narrowly over Hubert Humphrey in 1968 in large part because he claimed to
have a secret plan to end the war.

One of the things that infuriates the people you correspond with on this
list, Doug, is your apparent conviction that only you are capable of
mourning the casualties of war.

What I said was that I had not seen an alternative in anything you have
posted. If you know of one, you haven't shared it with us in all of the
hundreds of thousands of words of blather you have posted in the past seven
weeks.
The international aid agencies and the United Nations are trying to conduct
relief operations under impossible circumstances, and if that was my job I'd
be calling for a bombing halt too. On the other hand, if those "folks" had
the responsibility to eliminate the forces that have killed several thousand
American civilians and explicitly promised to try to kill the rest of us,
they might take a different view.
