Yes, I will have to think more, draft, write, re-write, think, ponder,
avoid all these distractions. It can be done.
Thank you Tiarnan for your reply.
I'm sorry that I resorted to profanity and acted like an internet loon.
I'm sorry Doug, I was wrong. I should not have said the things I said. I
hope you will forgive me and let it go.
I'm neither with nor against either side in this protracted war of
words.
It's easy enough to avoid the fray, simply ignore it. It's not going to
stop.
What is an author? This essay is apt for two reasons.
First, as Paul has been pointing out, it is appropriate because it deals
with what Foucault terms, four characteristics of the author of a book
or text, which happen to fit very nicely to the kinds of things that
Wicks, as narrator, story teller, author of unpublished sermons, printer
and poster of anonymous political commentary and accounts of certain
crimes, outlaw, etc., is involved in.
Foucault addresses the period in which Wicks is living and several
changes, reversals, that occurred during the period and how these
affected authors, texts, readers of texts, the law, the attribution and
appropriation of authorship, including how scientific publications and
writings were treated and how religious publications and writings were
treated....
I'll come back to this with some examples from M&D and some excerpts
from the Foucault essay.
Second, it's a very essay because it goes to the heart of many of our
most contentious debates. It's lit crit, but it's not difficult or
jargon loaded. With it, we may be able to identify some of our
differences. Once we understand where and why we disagree, we can
debate. We may never agree. We don't have to, nor should we expect to or
want to, but we will have some guide, some common text and terms, and
this should help.
Otto said he can't think of religion and postmodernism in the same room
or something like that. Well, what Foucault does is to turn to St.
Jerome. Geronimo! Now there was a misogynist!!
There was this Knight
guy name Jeff
and this Wife from Bath
and they were on there way to an orgy
at St. Jerome's monestary.
