MDMD2: None But the Best ...

"Each of us is to have his own twin Telescope, by Mr.
Dollond, fitted with the latest of his marvelous
Achromatics,-- our Clock by Mr. Ellicott,-- and of
course the Sector by your Mr. Bird,-- none but the
best for this Party, I should say!" (M&D, Ch. 2, p.
13)

Okay, not like I haven't been through this passage a
few times already, but, as I came across something I'd
forgotten entirely about at the time ...

>From Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, "Observations
made at the Cape of Good Hope," Philosophical
Transactions of the Royal Society, er, "Read April 22,
1762" ...

"The instruments made use of, in these
observations, were, two reflecting telescopes, each
two feet focal length, and magnifying 120 times, made
by Mr. Short.
"A quadrant of one foot radius, made by Mr. Bird,
and the property of the Earl of Macclesfield.
"An astronomical clock, made by Mr. Ellicott." (p.
394)

Sorry, didn't note Vol., No., etc., there, I believe I
was making use of a bibliography I don't have at hand
for such niceties. Having archive problems (oh,
Murthy ...), so I can't post links to other posts on M
& D's instrumentation, but, for the time being, all
bets are off now ...
